Previous Year Question (PYQs)

If the angle of intersection at a point where two circles with radii 5cm and 12cm intersect is $90^\circ$, then the length (in cm) of their common chord is:

Solution

$AB = \dfrac{2 \cdot r_1 \cdot r_2}{\sqrt{r_1^2 + r_2^2}}$
$ = \dfrac{2 \times 5 \times 12}{\sqrt{25 + 144}} = \dfrac{120}{\sqrt{169}}$
$ = \dfrac{120}{13}$
$\boxed{AB = \dfrac{120}{13} \text{ cm}}$
