Previous Year Question (PYQs)

In the standard Ethernet with transmission rate of $10$ Mbps, assume that the length of the medium is $2500$ m and size of a frame is $512$ bytes. The propagation speed of a signal in a cable is normally $2 \times 10^8$ m/s. Calculate Transmission delay and propagation delay.

Solution

Transmission delay formula:

$\text{Transmission delay}=\frac{\text{Frame size}}{\text{Bandwidth}}$

According to the options, frame size is considered as $512$ bits.

So,

$\text{Transmission delay}=\frac{512}{10 \times 10^6}$

$=51.2\mu s$

Propagation delay formula:

$\text{Propagation delay}=\frac{\text{Distance}}{\text{Propagation speed}}$

$\text{Propagation delay}=\frac{2500}{2 \times 10^8}$

$=12.5 \times 10^{-6}$ seconds

$=12.5\mu s$

So, transmission delay is $51.2\mu s$ and propagation delay is $12.5\mu s$.
